Sr. High School

Senior High Schools in Austin represent some of the best educational and college preparatory programs in the state. Whether you choose a public school, a private school, or one of the many specialized programs in Austin, Sr. High is a time of rapid growth and self-discovery. Austin is a great place to grow up and some of the best high schools in the nation are found here! Recreational activities and team sports - in school and out - abound and your young adult child can find his or her niche with just a little bit of searching. Look for college preparatory focus, well-developed guidance counselor program and student support services, diverse and extensive extra-curricular offerings, and acceptable and consistent TAKS scores in the student body.

Graduation Requirements in Texas include:

Beginning with the incoming freshman class of 2007-2008

  • 26 course credits to graduate
  • 4 credits each in math, science, social studies, and English language arts
  • Passing grades in all classes
  • Pass 4 sections of the exit level TAKS (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills)
  • Local Districts may have additional graduation requirements

Private  Schools

Private Schools in Austin offer educational opportunities with a wide range of curriculum, religious or philosophical backgrounds, and a wide variety of extracurricular activities and special interest programs. Private schools have significant tuition requirements but many offer financial aid or scholarship opportunities. Uniforms can be mandatory (at the expense of the parents) while some private schools simply require a strict/conservative dress code.

Athletics programs in private schools have grown in central Texas over the last decade and can offer your child competitive sportsmanship opportunities. TAPPS (Texas Association of Parochial and Private Schools) governs and awards the athletic and academic competition programs in private schools in Texas and aligns member schools into districts (similar to UIL in the pubic school system). Public Schools

“The Blue Ribbon Schools Program (BRSP) was established in 1982 by the U.S. Department of Education to identify and recognize schools that have exemplary education programs and student achievement. Since it’s inception, 4,418 schools have been recognized nationwide. Schools are screened at the local, state, and national level for the Blue Ribbon selection. The U.S. Department of Education presents the Blue Ribbon Award to schools which have strong leadership; a clear vision; high-quality teaching; challenging curriculum; policies and practices which ensure a safe environment conductive to learning; a solid commitment to parental involvement; and evidence that the school helps all students achieve high standards.” (source)
