Home School is legal in Texas and common in Austin. Children must be enrolled in some form of education program, public, private or home school by the age of 6. Legislation establishes Home School as a Private School. Registration to Home School is not required but letter of intent to home school is usually submitted when withdrawing from a public school. Written Curriculum must be used (including from audio, video, or Internet source).
Home School children do not have to take the TAKS nor submit to any standardized testing. The State of Texas does not award diplomas to graduating seniors of home school programs; you may order a diploma from the Texas Home School Coalition when all graduation requirements have been met.
